Nurturing Parenting

Nurturing is the ability to care, to demonstrate compassion and to promote the positive qualities of others. For human beings, nurturing is perhaps the single most important quality to have for families to live in harmony and happiness.

Nurturing Parenting is a philosophy that emphasizes the importance of raising children in a warm, trusting and caring home. Nurturing Parenting guides parents to raise their children using seven well founded principles:

1. Feelings of Attachment

Attached parents convey a deep love for their children which is unconditional. When children feel loved unconditionally, communication, trust and respect naturally follow.

2. Empathy

Empathy is the ability of parents to put themselves in the place of their children, to understand how they feel, what they think about things and how they view their world.

3. Nurturing Oneself

Nurturing yourself as a man or a woman is very important in being a nurturing father or mother. Taking the time to get your own needs met forms the foundation of understanding and helping children get their needs met.

4. Gentle Touch

Touch is one of the most powerful interactions between parents and children. Continuous gentle touch promotes healthy brain development in children and a positive sense of their self.

5. Discipline

Setting limits through family rules, teaching right from wrong through family morals, and teaching respect and worth through family values are all part of the practice of Nurturing Parenting.

6. Expressing Feelings

It is just as important to express anger, sadness and frustration as it is to express love, happiness and joy. Teaching children how to express all of their feelings is an important quality of the Nurturing Parent.

7. Expectations and Self-Worth

Having appropriate expectations of children is one of the best ways to promote their positive self worth. Children who think good thoughts about themselves and who feel good about themselves treat others the same way.
