Joe Miller welcomed the group and opened the meeting with prayer. Special thanks to Bob McClelland for preparing a wonderful lunch for attendees! The agenda was to receive reports from committee leaders on the progress of their respective committees.

  • Hygiene Kits – Greta Miller advised that the Sunday school classes would assemble the kits (about 200) in about three weeks.

  • Children Activities/Children to Children Drawings – Nancy Sterling reported that she met with Cindy Webber regarding the crafts (about 150) and it was decided that all the kids in the church would be involved. Also mentioned was designing a banner to include adult’s signatures and children’s handprints. In addition, a cross activity was discussed.

  • Sewing Kits/Fabric – Martha Rupel stated that she has contacted the women’s Circle leaders and they have scheduled a meeting on May 7 to discuss collecting items. It was noted that providing samples would be helpful.

  • School Supplies – Judy Riekse reported that they would need 200 school supplies for both villages. There will be a call for school supplies donations from the congregation and Judy will prepare a comprehensive list of all the items needed (including sewing kits/fabrics and other items) for Grace’s Information Station. Judy will also check on publishing the list in the Grace newsletter, View from the Pew, and Internet website.

  • Bubbles and Fixings – Nancy Sterling’s sister, Paula Rudolph, from Tampa, Florida, is looking into buying bubbles, tennis balls, jump ropes, Frisbees, and other such fun-related items.

  • La Fiesta at Village – Heather Potter reported that it would likely be similar to last year’s celebration with music, dancing, piñata, lemonade, watermelon, and a small presentation to distribute photos, gloves, crosses, and crafts. It was suggested that ideas also be solicited from Erik Hawkins.

  • Home Care Packets and Camera– It was decided that only work gloves were necessary this year. Marc Sterling will announce at Men’s Fellowship a need for leather/canvas work gloves. Kendall Morris was volunteered to be in charge of the camera.

  • Suitcases (or alternatives) – Greg Suess stated that he has located some suitcases from last year and he and Peggy will go to thrift stores to seek more. There was some concern that the airlines may have changed weight limits for suitcases and may be stricter on enforcement.

  • Fiesta at Church – The Fiesta is scheduled for Sunday, June 15, with Sue Church from HOI in attendance. Nancy Sterling, Heather Potter, and Chef Bob McClelland are working on all the decorations, music, publicity, and food. A monetary donation will be suggested instead of a set price.

  • Forms and Money – Mike Hatfield advised mission team members that the first deposit of $500 was due May 1 and all required forms and any balance due (payable to Grace Presbyterian Church) needed to be in by May 13. Mission team members were reminded again to be cognizant of the medical shots and passport requirements that are necessary to travel to Honduras.

There are several opportunities in June for Minute for Mission announcements during Sunday church service. The Reverend Jay Click suggested that the speaker be very specific in what is needed or being requested.

The last Sunday in May, Bob McClelland will promote the Fiesta and quilt raffle. In addition, a table will be set up in Fellowship Hall and staffed on Sundays after church to sell quilt raffle tickets.

The first Sunday in June will focus on school supplies and Spanish books. The second Sunday will stress the need for work gloves, sewing supplies, and hygiene kits. The congregation will be informed on how they can “sponsor” the aforementioned items. The third Sunday will be Sue Church and the Fiesta.

Home Team and Mission members recognized a request for T-shirts and Barb Cuthbert agreed to check into it and order twenty-five.

Important dates:

May 25 – next Honduras Home and Mission Team meeting

June 15 – Sue Church from HOI will be at Grace, the Fiesta, and the Quilt raffle drawing.

June 21 – pack suitcases at the church.

The meeting was closed with prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Mike Hatfield
