What About The Honduras Water Project?

Well, the Honduran government and Honduras Outreach Inc (HOI) are still evaluating the water project. The water project at the village of El Quebrachal SE was put on hold last year because it was determined that digging a well was not a viable alternative.  A local farmer drilled a well close to the village and within a month it was contaminated with salt water therefore it was decided that a salt-water aquifer ran through the area and thus drilling a well would be risky.  Alternatives were evaluated and the best alternative as proposed by the government was to provide water to the village through a gravity drain system. The gravity drain system has been used successfully in Honduras for many villages. The proposed project is to build a dam in the Rio Chiquito River, which is located in the Cocalita Mountains in the Agalta area. Two to six inch plastic pipes will be used to route the water from the dam to the village over a distance of about 22-km (14 miles).  The Honduras Mission Team 2002 reviewed the dam site and recommended to the Grace Church congregation that the gravity fed water project would be the best alternative to get fresh water to El Quebrachal.  The cost and viability of this project was determined in 2002.  The cost was extremely high at over $100,000.  HOI recommended that alternative funding be considered and that the government should provide more financial support for the project.  In 2002, the Red political party was in charge in Honduras and did not support more financing of the water project for El Quebrachal.  In 2003, the political party changed and now the government of Honduras is considering financing a significant potion of the water project.  As we were told four years ago, we must work on Honduran time, and we must be patient with this project.  We have over $20,000 being held in the Honduras Fund at Grace church for this water project and we pray that the Government of Honduras eventually will approve this project to begin.  Until then, please pray for the village of El Quebrachal SE.   I know the Holy Sprit will show the Hondurans the way in making the right decision about this important water project.  If you have any questions, please contact Joe Miller at (703) 313-6216.
